On a laser cutting machine, the operator needs more than a screen showing the cutting path. The control station must also run the machine software, load jobs, accept parameter changes, display alarms, and exchange data with the equipment controller throughout the cutting process.

For this fabrication equipment project, a 15-inch industrial panel PC was integrated into the machine as the main operator interface. Instead of using a separate monitor and external computer, the manufacturer combined computing, touch control, local storage, and industrial communication ports in one machine-mounted HMI.

1. Technical Requirements

The panel PC is installed directly beside the laser cutting area, where operators use it continuously during setup, production, and job changeover. The application therefore focused on practical machine-side requirements.

  • A 15-inch touch interface with enough screen area for cutting software, machine status, coordinates, alarms, and job information
  • An integrated computing platform capable of running the laser cutting application and related operator software
  • A 5-wire resistive touchscreen suitable for routine shop-floor operation and glove input
  • Fanless hardware for extended operating periods without relying on internal cooling fans
  • Industrial interfaces such as RS232, Ethernet, and USB for communication with controllers and peripherals
  • An all-metal enclosure suitable for installation close to production equipment
  • Flexible mounting options for integration into the machine console or operator station
  • Support for Windows or Linux according to the machine builder's software environment

The objective was not to replace the dedicated motion or laser controller. The industrial PC needed to work above that control layer, giving the operator a practical interface to the machine.

2. Solution Implementation

A 15-inch industrial panel PC was integrated into the laser cutting machine as the main operator HMI and machine-side computing platform. It runs the laser cutting software locally while communicating with the existing control system.

  • Runs the cutting software and displays job information, machine status, coordinates, alarms, and processing progress.
  • Allows operators to load files, adjust parameters, start or stop tasks, and acknowledge alarms through the 5-wire resistive touchscreen.
  • Uses RS232, Ethernet, and USB interfaces to communicate with PLCs, laser controllers, motion control hardware, and other peripherals.
  • Combines the display, touchscreen, computing hardware, and SSD storage in one machine-mounted unit, reducing the need for separate control hardware.
  • Uses a fanless J4125 platform and metal enclosure for continuous operation in a fabrication environment.

The panel PC handles the operator interface, job management, parameter input, monitoring, and controller communication. Real-time laser output and motion control remain with the dedicated PLC, motion controller, or laser controller.

 

3. Project Benefits

By combining the HMI and computing platform into one unit, the machine builder was able to simplify the operator station while keeping the existing laser control architecture unchanged.

The deployment provided several practical benefits:

  • Integrated operator station: computing, display, touch input, storage, and communication are contained in one unit.
  • Simplified equipment layout: no separate industrial computer and standalone monitor are required at the control position.
  • Direct machine interaction: operators can manage files, parameters, commands, alarms, and production status from one interface.
  • Glove-friendly touch control: the resistive touchscreen suits routine operation on a metal fabrication floor.
  • Flexible controller connectivity: serial, Ethernet, and USB interfaces support different machine architectures.
  • Reduced cabinet complexity: fewer separate computing components need to be mounted and wired inside the machine.
  • Adaptable installation: the panel PC can be incorporated into different machine consoles, brackets, or panel-mounted layouts.

For the equipment manufacturer, the main value was not simply adding a touchscreen. It was creating a compact machine-side control interface that could run the application software and communicate with the existing control hardware from one platform.

“We use the panel PC as the main operating interface on our laser cutting machine. The resistive touch works well for normal workshop operation, and the available communication ports made integration with our control system straightforward.”

The customer also found that using an integrated panel PC made the control station easier to assemble.
